  • access to mental health service,
  • education,
  • treatment,
  • medication and support programs.
Also we want to serve collaboration and professional needs for who are committed to- or are working in, mental health.

Staff members and participants of the ZPA

Mr. Mlingi M. Mbwire, chairman

The founder and also the chairman of the ZPA was  convinced him and decide to establish this organization was to help people with mental illness. Many people who suffer with mental disability lack support from their families and the community at large, so through good will of Mr. Milingi Mganga Bwire he decided to help these people through establishing this organization.

Mrs. M.A. Brouwer, director

My name is Maureen Brouwer, I am a psychiatrist and as a part of my residency, I worked at Kidongo Chekundu Mental Hospital, Zanzibar.
There I met a lot of patients and felt they had a hard life. I also met all hard working nurses and doctors. After my residency I had to leave Zanzibar but it was still in my heart.

Now I'd like to make a good program together with Mlingi Bwire (chairman) and Rolf van Dalen (my husband) to help patients from Zanzibar so that they can participate in the system.

Siti Mbarouk and Zuhara Khamis

Both working as nurses for the ZPA in Wete, Pemba.

Dr. Gerhard Miksch, Psychiatrist.

My name is Gerhard Miksch. I am a psychiatrist from Austria and am travelling to Zanzibar since 2008 .
In 2010 I started visiting the Mental Hospital 'Kidongo Chekundu' on Zanzibar and since 2015 I am collaborating with the ZPA.
I used to come three Times a year to Zanzibar, visiting ZPA and consult patients there, since 2018 I am visiting Zanzibar once a year.

In 2013 I started the 'Haloperidol Program'. I provide the Haloperidol Decanoat Depot Injections to Zanzibar in order to treat patients with psychotic disorders. They get an injection every 4 weeks and don´t have to take any oral medication . We treat about 30 patients on Unguja. Last winter I went to Pemba and we started to treat people over there.

The monthly amount for treatment is € 25.

Mr. Rolf van Dalen

My name is Rolf van Dalen. I am a psychiatric nurse and social worker. Since 2016 I am collaborating with the ZPA.
My personal belief is that mental health is constantly under pressure  in  every society, globally.  In order to gain space in society for people with a mental illness, we have to raise awareness and support on a community level. Unfortunate people are still easily defensive of anyone who is not conform average. A majority of people like to  stress this with  denominations such as: 'crazy', 'deviant', 'maladjusted', 'bewitched', etc.
